About RHGC Tour

Who:

The Rockhill Homes and Gardens Club invites you to join us.

What:

A walking tour* of the historic Rockhill neighborhood featuring over 40 homes of architectural interest and tour day only entrance into 8 beautiful gardens. Each ticket (20$ in advance, 25$ day of) entitles you to a tour bracelet for garden entrance and a 32 page full color brochure filled with history, architecture, garden information and a map of the tour. You will also want to visit the Rockhill Boutique to learn more about the care of your garden and purchase an array of unique items from local vendors.

*People with disabilities may park in the neighborhood.

When:

Saturday, May 17 from 10 am to 4 pm. In case of rain, check this website to see if the event will shift to Sunday, May 18. No refunds will be issued on tickets.

Where:

  • The Rockhill neighborhood is located just to the east of the Nelson Atkins Museum in Kansas City, Missouri. We are bound by 44th Street to the north; Pierce and Emanuel Cleaver II to the south.
  • Parking is available in the lot of the Ewing and Muriel Kauffman Memorial Garden at 4800 Rockhill Road.
  • Check-in at the Welcome Tent. The tent is located just north of the parking lot across from 532 Pierce Street.  Show your ticket and receive your tour bracelet and brochure with a map.
  • Houses are numbered, but you choose your route. Your bracelet gains your entrance into the gardens but we ask that you please view the architecture from the sidewalk.

Why:

We’re celebrating our Golden Jubilee. It’s been 50 years since Rockhill was designated a historic neighborhood. William Rockhill Nelson established the neighborhood in 1904. The residents who live here are dedicated to keeping it the beautiful community of diverse architecture and beautiful landscapes the founder originally envisioned.

Our Mission

  • Enhance the appearance of the Rockhill historic neighborhood at entry points;
  • Care for the Pocket Park and the Narrows on our east side;
  • Be a resource for timely information on planting, garden and tree care;
  • Share information in the RHA newsletter related to the history of our neighborhood and homes.
  • Repeat of a Homes and Gardens tour in 2025.

Our Activities

Our first activity was to address the west side of our neighborhood where most of the trees on the median of Rockhill Road had died.

On October 31, 2022, we planted 21 trees on the median between 45th Street and Cleaver II. An arborist from Parks and Rec provided guidance and approval for the trees that were selected. We agreed to ensure trees are watered and mulched until they are established.

Our Funding

A nonprofit corporation has been setup to assist in funding the club. It is the Midtown Kansas City Stewards Limited. The goal of that nonprofit is to seek funding to support the club’s efforts for future tree planting and maintenance of the Pocket Park and Narrows.  Another 30 or 35 trees are still needed on the median south of Cleaver II and on the east side of Rockhill Road and to visually widen the space at the Narrows. We hope to accomplish these additional plantings in 2025.
